O’Brien’s playing career was highlighted by a Pennsylvania High School Hockey State Championship in 2005, followed by a stint with the NAHL Youngstown Phantoms in 2006. At Penn State, he continued to develop his on-ice expertise from 2007 to 2011.

After his collegiate career, Tim transitioned into coaching, bringing his experience and knowledge to the Bethel Park Varsity team as an Assistant Coach from 2011 to 2016. Brian Hartman - Head Coach, 15OAAA Team

At Niagara University from 2002 to 2005, Brian was a full scholarship player and consistently ranked among the top four defensemen on the team. His time at Niagara was marked by competing alongside and against over 200 future NHL players, earning him a spot on the 2002-2003 College Hockey America All-Rookie Team and multiple years on the All-Academic Team. His collegiate career peaked with the 2003-2004 season, where he contributed to the team's Conference Championship victory and participation in the NCAA Division 1 Frozen Four Ice Hockey Tournament.

Prior to college, Brian served as the captain of the Pittsburgh Forge (North American Hockey League) for the 2001-2002 season, leading the Tier 1 Junior “A” expansion team to the USA Tier 1 National Championship Game.
