12/02/2017, 11:15am EST
By Ron Michalak

Registration is now open for our Fall Pink Panther session.

While Mites and programs such as Little Penguins provide an avenue for the youngest hockey fans to begin playing the sport, the Pink Panthers program is targeted toward female players between the ages of 6 and 15 who want to give hockey a try. Pink Panthers will meet on Sunday evenings at 7pm from January 7th through March 18th at the South Hills YMCA in Bethel Park. The fee for the program is $100.

SHAHA is a leader in promoting women's hockey in Western Pennsylvania, offering U12 and U19 teams for the 2017-2018. If you have friends or family with a daughter who fits this criteria, have them register and give it a try! Full equipment is required, as is USA Hockey registration. Email girls@shaha.org for more information.

If you have any other questions, please contact Ellen Halloran, Director of Girls Hockey at girls@shaha.org

By Ron Michalak

SHAHA is happy to announce that we will be fielding Independent Midget teams at U15 and U16 for the 2017-18 season.  The decision was made to provide players with an increased level of competition while at the same time providing scheduling flexibility for the players and families involved.

These teams will not be playing in the PAHL, and will instead participate in several local and travel tournaments, as well as scheduled games with other AAA/AA organizations around the region.

OPEN SKATE

We will be hosting an Open Skate for both teams on April 20th.

    • Contact Keith Reed to attend (email)
  • Midget U16AA - 9:00pm - 9:50pm
    • Contact Jamie Colecchi to attend (email)

Only players that can compete on a AA level should attend, and there is no cost for this session.  Evaluations for the teams will not occur at these sessions, but players will be closely monitored by the respective coaching staffs.

Players already registered for the standard tryout dates are strongly encouraged to attend the Open Skate.

2017/18 Openings for AA and Girls Players

02/21/2017, 8:30am EST
By Ron Michalak

Tryouts begin Monday, April 24th at the YMCA rink and we are still fielding registrations at the following levels:

  • Squirt, PeeWee and Bantam AA
  • Midget U16A and U18A
  • Girls U12, U14, U16 and U19 (with discounts for players with other Co-Ed PAHL organizations)
  • Squirt A/B

We wanted to take the opportunity to communicate across the entire organization some more important details as it pertains to the 2017/18 season.

Tryout Dates:

  • Thursday, April 27th and Tuesday, May 2nd - Midget U15AA Independent  (Program Details)
  • Monday, April 24th and Tuesday, April 25th – Squirt, PeeWee and Bantam AA/Team 1 tryouts
  • Wednesday, April 26th through Tuesday, May 2nd – All remaining Squirt through Midget tryouts
  • Thursday, May 4th and Saturday, May 6th – Girls U16 & U19
  • TBD – Girls U12 & U14
  • Early August – Mite placements

Tryout Registration:

  • All participants will need to register online through the SHAHA website at the following link.
  • Registration will open on Friday, February 24th, and we are asking that all returning SHAHA players register by March 31st so we can plan accordingly
  • Of the tryout fee, $200 will be retained as a commitment fee that will be put towards your season fees

Team Information:

  • Mite – We will accept a maximum of 60 players among 6 team units.  All returning players registered will be guaranteed a roster spot next season.
  • Squirt – We will host 5 teams at this level, and all returning players registered will be guaranteed a roster spot next season.
  • PeeWee – We will host 5 teams at this level, and all returning players registered will be guaranteed a spot next season.
  • Bantam – We will host 6 teams at this level, and due to the amount of returning skaters to this level, we at this time cannot guarantee a roster spot for all returning SHAHA players.  Non-SHAHA players will be permitted to only tryout for potential AA level teams, and not the remaining teams being constructed.
  • Midget – We intend on fielding an A level team at both U16 and U18, as well as independent AA teams at U18, U16 and U15.  A level teams will continue to be considered game only once the PAHL season begins.  Placement of players to these teams will be at the directive of the head coach of each team, and returning SHAHA players will not be guaranteed a roster spot.
  • Girls – We anticipate offering a team at all four levels (U12, U14, U16 and U19), however the fielding and placement of these teams will depend on the division offering by the PAHL.

Ice Time and Development:

  • SHAHA will continue to offer power skating, skills sessions, and goalie instruction to the Squirt, PeeWee, and Bantam teams.
    • Squirt, PeeWee, Bantam, and Girls U16 and U19 - two weeknight practices per week while Girls U14 - one weeknight practice per week
    • Girls U12 - weekend practices only, upon coach's request
    • Midget - practices TBD, with some weeknight practices through September followed by approximately one weekend practice per month beginning in October
    • Supplemental practices will be available upon coach's request for weekend ice not used for games. All teams will have weekend practices assigned in addition to their regular weeknight practices in the beginning of the season prior to the start of PAHL placement games.

Season Fees:

  • Ice costs continue to rise annually. Season fees for most teams have been raised $50, consistent with the 3% increase in the hourly cost of ice. Girls team and independent Midget team costs have been adjusted to capture our costs of putting these teams on the ice.
  • Season fees once again will need to be paid online.  This season we are now offering options to pay the season fees in full, in a 5 installment plan or in an 8 installment plan.

Our goal is to keep you as informed as possible as changes occur, and we ask that you bookmark the important dates for registration and tryouts highlighted above.

If you can’t find an answer to a question you may have, please send questions/comments to communications@shaha.org and we will get you an answer as soon as possible.

Thank you for your decision in being a member of SHAHA this past season and we look forward to the future with you.
